Instant cash for empty bottles and cans from this machine.

September 25, 2010

Recycling companies are coming up with innovative ways to pay the people for recycling their empties. In one such initiative, a Reverse Vending Machine (RVM) — that takes in empty recyclable bottles and cans, and gives out cash in return — have been introduced at the Centro Hollywood shopping mall in Adelaide, Australia.

How Does It Work?

The empties recycling process starts with users placing their empties in the RVM’s feed unit. Each bottle or can is

identified by an imaging camera and if accepted, it is then compacted and sorted into a built-in recycle bin. The material can go straight to a recycling depot from there. The RVM gives them the cash in the form of a receipt, which they can exchange for currency by scanning it into an adjacent cash machine.
